Company Story

Launceston Custom Cabinets grew out of a simple frustration Steve Smith kept hearing in Tasmanian homes: the nearest IKEA is across Bass Strait, flat-pack has to be freighted in, and a boxed kitchen almost never fits the out-of-square walls of a home built when Launceston was already decades old. Founded in 1806 as Australia's third-oldest city after Sydney and Hobart, Launceston is full of Georgian, Victorian and Federation houses that were never built to a standard module. Steve started the business to build cabinetry the other way round, measured and scribed to the actual room, whether that is a heritage kitchen in Trevallyn, a family renovation in Kings Meadows or a new-build robe out at Legana. Twelve years on, the workshop still runs on the same rule: every carcass built square, every reveal packed straight, and one local person to call if anything ever needs attention.

The business is led by owner-cabinet maker Steve Smith, who measures, designs and installs each job personally and calls on a small circle of trusted local trades: licensed stonemasons for natural granite and marble benchtops, plus qualified plumbers and electricians for kitchen and laundry connections. Keeping the team small and local means the person who measured your heritage kitchen in Newstead is the person who scribes it to the wall, and the person you ring afterwards is the person who built it.

Launceston Custom Cabinets is owned and run by Steve Smith, a cabinet maker with more than 12 years on the tools across northern Tasmania. The business carries $20 million public liability cover and works only with compliant benchtop surfaces, so every kitchen, robe and laundry is built to current Australian workplace-safety law. We do not fabricate or install engineered or reconstituted stone, in line with the national prohibition that took effect on 1 July 2024, with importation banned from 1 January 2025. Carcasses are built in 16-18mm board, glued and dowelled square, and fitted with quality soft-close hardware rated well past 100,000 open-close cycles.

Second, materials suited to a cold-winter city where BOM records around 665mm of rain and minimums below 2 degrees on roughly 61 days a year, so heated homes swing between warm dry air and cold damp, and we spec 16-18mm HMR board with heat-sealed edges in wet areas to cope.
