Walk-In and Dressing-Room Layouts

A walk-in wardrobe can be almost any shape, and the layout is everything, so we start with your clothes and the room, not a template. If the space is too shallow to actually stand inside, a built-in wardrobe is the better answer and we will say so early. For narrow spaces we build single-sided and galley walk-ins with hanging and shelving down one or both walls; for square rooms we build U-shaped fit-outs that wrap three walls and make the most of the corners; and for larger main-bedroom suites we build full dressing rooms with a central island of soft-close drawers, a bench top for folding or a coffee station, and even a seat. The planning is done in real dimensions rather than by eye. We allow roughly 600mm of depth for any hanging section so shoulders sit square on the rail instead of pressing against the back, about 1,000mm of height for each tier of a double-hang run, and 1,600 to 1,800mm of clear height for long-hang where coats and full-length dresses go. Shelving for folded clothes and bags usually sits between 350 and 450mm deep, and where an island goes in we hold about 900mm of walking space on every side so drawers can open fully with someone standing at them. Inside, we combine double-hang and long-hang zones, banks of drawers for folded clothes, open shelving for bags and shoes, dedicated shoe racks, pull-out trouser and tie rails, hooks, and a top shelf for luggage and the out-of-season clothing that a real Launceston winter demands. A walk-in wardrobe gets used every single day, so it has to be built to last and easy to live with. We build the cabinetry from quality board, glued and dowelled and assembled square in the workshop, then scribe the units to the walls and pack them level on site with reveals held to about 2mm. Interiors are fully adjustable, so hanging rails, shelves and drawer banks can be moved as your storage needs change, and drawers run on full-extension runners rated around 40kg, stepping up where a bank carries heavier loads, so they glide fully open and close softly. Doors and drawer fronts sit on quality Blum or Hettich soft-close hardware rated past 100,000 cycles with three-way adjustment. Climate still shapes the build. Custom Walk-In or a Flat-Pack Kit From the Mainland?

A walk-in wardrobe is the last thing you want to buy as a fixed-size kit, and in Tasmania the flat-pack route is harder again. There is no IKEA in the state, so an IKEA wardrobe system means freighting it across Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania or air-freighting from Melbourne, wearing the freight cost and lead time, with any missing or damaged part triggering another shipment.
